The Balearic Islands Tourist Board Encouraging Visitors to Save Water

A new awareness campaign encouraging visitors to save water in the Balearic Islands has been launched by the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency

A new awareness campaign encouraging visitors to save water in the Balearic Islands has been launched by the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency to help mitigate water shortage issues in the archipelago by improving the water cycle within all links of the tourism chain.

This project from the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion comprises of nine partners, of which three are bringing the Balearic branch of the project to life: the Balearic Islands Tourist Board (AETIB); the Balearic Water Agency; and the Chemical Cluster of the Balearic Islands (CLIQIB).

Xisco Mateu, the Director of the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency says:

“The implementation of water-saving measures will reduce pressure on aquifers, enabling them to recover. Given the context of the climate emergency, these initiatives are also crucial for increasing the resilience of the islands when facing future droughts”.

The campaign consists of an overarching video and a series of short clips explaining the individual needs of the region, followed by advice and an awareness-raising message with a call to action. This Balearic-specific informative campaign will spread the word online in the five languages of the archipelago’s main tourist markets: English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

All campaign content can be accessed through the project’s microsite, which is also available in five languages, in addition to an accessible QR code that can be found on collaborating tourist accommodation sites. This highly visual portal has been designed to educate visitors on the delicate water situation in the Balearic Islands. Workshops and meetings with the tourism sector and local administrative bodies will also be held in order to communicate these water saving initiatives.

The campaign is being launched within the framework of the three-year LIFE WAT’SAVEREUSE project, which has a 1.5 billion euro total budget and aims to promote the benefits of reducing water consumption and reusing water in tourist areas.
