Northern Ireland to Mark the Death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

A Royal gun salute will take place at Hillsborough Castle

On the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, many across the world are preparing plans to remember and pay respect to the longest reigning British Monarch.

Her Majesty died at Balmoral Estate, Scotland, on 8th September 2022.

The coffin will be moved to Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Sunday 11 September, before flying to London where Queen Elizabeth II will lye in state.

How will Northern Ireland pay it’s respects?

  • Hillsborough Castle in Royal Hillsborough is the official government residence in northern Ireland.  It is the official residence of the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland and the official residence in Northern Ireland for member of the Royal Family. Hillsborough Castle will lead NI’s tributes with a Royal gun salute at 1pm. 96 rounds will be fired- One to mark every year of Her Majesty’s life.
  • Proclamations will be read throughout the UK’s devolved governments, including Belfast.  The NI Assembly is expected to be called in recent day as to allow members to pay their respects.
  • A book of condolences will available across the province in different sites on Friday 10 September, including Belfast City and Derry City and Strabane Council.
  • Once Her Majesty’s coffin has been taken and remained in London, the official funeral service will  take place on Monday 19th September. This will be televised to the nation and a national two minutes silence will be held.
