Taking the number one spot for the best swimming hotspot in Europe is Elafonissi Beach, located in the southwest corner of Crete, Greece. The beach is renowned for its pink sands and pristine waters, creating an idyllic setting that remains uncrowded due to its remote location.

In second place is another Crete beach; the panoramic views and turquoise waters of Balos Beach in Crete, Greece, match Elafonissi with a bathing temperature of 26.1 degrees. Balos is a fantastic destination to enjoy a dip in turquoise waters whilst revelling in panoramic views. Whilst it can get crowded during the peak summer, the 7,698 five-star reviews on Tripadvisor, the second highest in the rankings, testify to its undeniable allure.

In third place is the beautiful Navagio Beach in Zakynthos. With its golden sands and shipwreck wonders, it’s a true gem. The beach boasts the fourth most hours of sunshine in August, averaging 359.3 hours, making it an ideal destination for visitors seeking to explore the famous shipwreck nestled amidst golden sands.

From the rankings, Greece dominates the top 10 list of swimming hotspots. But looking at the resorts in positions 11-20, you’ll notice that six Italian towns and villages make the cut, including Mariolu in Sardinia in 12th place and Sansone in Portoferraio in position 16.

Two more resorts in Spain make it into the top 15, including Moro in 11th and Cala Mijaneta in 15th, located in Mallorca and Menorca, respectively.

Jess Mortimer, an open-water swimming expert from Cold Water Magic, shares her top tips for swimming in open waters safely:

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Spending time in the sun and water can quickly dehydrate your body. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Pack a reusable water bottle to have on hand and sip on refreshing beverages to replenish electrolytes.

  2. Floatation Devices for Peace of Mind: If you’re not a confident swimmer or simply want extra peace of mind, consider using floatation devices such as life jackets or inflatable arm floats. These can provide added buoyancy and reassurance, allowing you to relax and enjoy your time in the water.

  3. Know Your Limits: Be mindful of your swimming abilities and stay within your comfort zone. Avoid venturing too far from the shore or into deep waters if you’re not a strong swimmer. Remember, it’s always better to swim closer to the shore and gradually increase your distance as your confidence grows.

  4. Respect the Sea and Its Inhabitants: Show respect for the marine environment by refraining from littering and disposing of trash properly. Additionally, avoid touching or disturbing any marine life you may encounter. Admire them from a safe distance and remember that we are visitors in their natural habitat.

  5. Assess the Water Conditions: Take a moment to assess the water conditions before entering. Check for any strong currents, waves, or undertows. Avoid swimming in rough or choppy waters, especially if you’re not a strong swimmer. If you’re unsure about the conditions, consult with local authorities or lifeguards.

Dave Mills, Director of Global Supply at Planet Cruise, comments on the findings: “Europe’s diverse coastline offers incredible swimming hotspots that cater to every beach lover’s dream, and we can’t wait to explore more of the beaches in the rankings ourselves. However, as you embark on your aquatic adventures, it’s crucial to prioritise safety, and we hope that following our precautionary measures, you have a delightful swimming experience in Europe’s enchanting waters.

If all this talk of swimming and sunbathing has got you dreaming of a summer holiday, then you’re in luck.
