Europe’s Most Active Volcano Erupts Causing Flight Cancellations

The island of Sicily has witnessed an eruption from Mount Etna, Europes most active volcano

The island of Sicily has witnessed an eruption from Mount Etna, Europes most active volcano, which has forced the nearby airport to close.  Catania Airport was scheduled to be the sixth busiest in Italy today (15 august) – with 235 flights scheduled to depart and arrive from the airport.

In total this week, Catania Airport was scheduled to see a total of 1,690 arrivals and departures.

From the UK, there were seven return flights scheduled to Catania Airport – with 42 return departures across the whole week.

The flights have been disrupted due to travelling ash from the eruption and travellers have been asked to frequently check the Catania Airport’s website for further updates on travel.
