Unite Stands With Thomas Cook Airline Staff in Belfast

Around 40 Belfast-based Thomas Cook airline staff were made redundant last Monday and have yet to receive their pay

There were around 40 Thomas Cook airline staff in Belfast.

They were made redundant last Monday and have not been paid, they were due their pay yesterday (Monday 30 September).

A Unite spokesperson said: “Unite is working to ensure that workers get everything they are entitled to that is unpaid wages, a claim for redundancy and the a mass legal claim for a protective award the failure of the company to inform and consult its workforce before making them redundant. This is a lengthy and complicated process.

“Also Unite is focussing on ensuring that this never happens again. Thomas Cook Airlines went into compulsory liquidation despite being profitable while Thomas Cook’s subsidiaries in Germany, Spain and Scandinavia are all still flying.

“We need additional rules like the Chapter 11 rules in the United States where workers can go into a form of protected administration where they keep flying, as finances are restructured, additional financing is found or there is a managed breakup of the company.”
