US Airlines and Search Sites to Display Full Fees in a Bid to Protect Customers

President Biden released the new proposed rule that would 'significantly strengthen protections for consumers'

The U.S. Department of Transportation are pushing a new proposal which would require US Airlines and Airline search sites to display all fees and costs to the consumer, upfront.

In a meeting in Washington on Monday 26 September, President Biden released the new proposed rule that would ‘significantly strengthen protections for consumers by ensuring that they have access to certain fee information before they purchase their airline tickets.’

Fees to be disclosed would include sitting with a child, changing or cancelling a flight and baggage charges.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has explained the proposal is in response to President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy, which sees the US Government work to lower prices for consumers, raise wages and promote innovation through competition.

“Airline passengers deserve to know the full, true cost of their flights before they buy a ticket,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “This new proposed rule would require airlines to be transparent with customers about the fees they charge, which will help travellers make informed decisions and save money.”
