An Irish tourist was charged by police after being caught defacing the Colosseum in Rome.

Security staff at the Colosseum Archaeological Park spotted the man using a sharp object to carve his initials into a stone on the first level of the 1,950-year-old landmark and notified the police.

The tourist was reportedly charged with damaging assets of historical and cultural importance.
