The North Atlantic’s Largest Marine Sanctuary is Created in Madeira

One of the very first protected areas in Portugal have extended their marine reserve

The protected marine sanctuary located in The Salvage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens) broadens its reserve an extra 12 miles around the islands creating the largest protected nature reserve in Europe and the Northern Atlantic.

Oceano Azul researchers have collaborated with Waitt Foundation and National Geographic Pristine Seas to carry out scientific research to support the need for a marine reserve.

Any living species inside the sanctuary are fully protected from any exploration for minerals, oil or gas as well as fishing.
