Hotly anticipated Sigmund Freud Museum to reopen in Vienna on 29th August following extensive renovation project

The Sigmund Freud Museum, located at Berggasse 19 in Vienna, is set to reopen on August 29, 2020, following an extensive 18 month refurbishment project, timing perfectly to coincide with the 120th anniversary of Freud’s ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’ being published.

The museum was the “birthplace of psychoanalysis”, where the famous physician, psychoanalyst and thinker Sigmund Freud lived and worked for nearly half a century. It offers a modernized and enlarged museum infrastructure, including a new foyer, shop and café. This museum is Europe’s largest newly renovated library of psychoanalysis and serves as a platform for research and communication. The architectural concept was developed by Atelier Czech, Walter Angonese and ARTEC Architects.

Boasting new and exquisite exhibitions including a presentation of contemporary art at the Showroom at Berggasse 19 and a new special exhibition on Freud’s multi-faceted cultural heritage. These provide a wide range of information on Freud’s life and work, on the historical development of psychoanalysis and offer critical perspectives on its current issues, including its importance for society and the arts. The history of the house Berggasse 19 and the fates of its inhabitants from 1880 to date will be presented in the newly constructed stairwell.
