Pushed Back EU Entry-Exit System To Be ‘Phased In’

Previously, the European Commission planned for an overnight switch-on of the new system

The European Commission have announced plans to implement ‘a phased approach’ to the introduction of the new Entry-Exit System (EES) biometric border system.

Back in July, the European Commission announced the rollout of the EES was postponed until mid-November. Previously, the European Commission planned for an overnight switch-on of the new system.

However, after experiencing continuous delays, the European Commission have decided to implement the new EES in stages.

By implementing the new system progressively, member states and non-EU nations, including the UK, will be given six months to adapt to the new system and guidelines.

Once implemented, the EES system will digitally record entries and exits of non-EU nationals travelling to the EU and Schengen zone for short-stays. The system will include enhanced passport checks alongside fingerprint and facial scans.

Currently, no date has been confirmed for the roll-out of the new EES system.
