Thousands of people have protested in Venice, calling for large ships to be banned from the city’s Giudecca canal.
The protest was held less than a week after MSC Opera crashed into a tourist boat, injuring four people.
An estimated 3,000 people marched through Venice in the demonstration organised by the No Great Ships movement.
The protestors say waves created by cruise ships erode the foundations of the city and the ships detract from the beauty of Venice’s historic sites, bringing in too many tourists. “If we want to save Venice and the lagoon, we shouldn’t allow those liners to enter. It is terrifying just to see them,” said one protester.
Following Sunday’s accident, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro urged immediate action to open the alternative channel in the city, known as the Vittorio Emanuele III.
