Peter Sommer Travels Announces Two New Tours for 2020

Cultural tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels has recently added two fascinating new trips to its 2020 programme: an exploration of the region of Macedonia in Greece and a walking tour of Hadrian's Wall in the UK

Both expert-led itineraries have been created to provide invaluable historical and archaeological insight into these spectacular and inspiring regions.

Exploring Macedonia

Discover the captivating history of Alexander the Great on this 11-night tour of Macedonia, from his birthplace in the city of Pella to the ancient city of Amphipolis, where troops were assembled en route to his epic campaign in Asia. Further exploration will uncover the history of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires during visits to world-famous destinations such as the royal tombs at Vergina, the embattled imperial splendour of Thessaloniki, the great sanctuary of Zeus at Dion and the towering ruins of Philippi, with its enormous Late Roman basilicas. Visits to lesser-known sites and a day spent on the island of Thasos will provide a deep understanding of ancient Greek life. Led by expert guides Heinrich Hall and Dr. Maria Girtzi.

Walking Hadrian’s Wall

Explore some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the UK during an eight-day walking tour of Hadrian’s Wall, following its route and visiting forts, turrets and milecastles to discover intriguing history and archaeology along the way. Visit bastle houses, the romantic medieval ruins of Lanercost Priory and Thirlwall Castle, which was built using stones from Hadrian’s Wall itself. Venturing north and south of the Wall will help to understand its compelling story, with routes through the Alston Valley and to the remote outpost fort at Bewcastle, as well as a visit to the Roman site of Vindolanda, where incredible preservation provides insight into the lives of soldiers and their families at the fort as well as those in the surrounding town. Led by expert guide Paul Beston.
