The ban, which comes into force in July, follows complaints from locals about over tourism.
Palma’s mayor believes the move will be a model for cities suffering with mass tourism. “Palma is a bold and decisive city,” said Mayor Antoni Noguera, according to reports in Spanish newspaper El Pais.
“We agreed on this on the basis of the general interest, and we believe that it will create a trend in other cities when they see that finding a balance is key.”
It comes after studies showed the number of unlicensed tourist apartments in the city rose 50 per cent between 2015 and 2017 to 20,000 units.
