Stormont ministers are virtually meeting today (30 December) to discuss current covid-19 restrictions, cases and data.

Health officials have told ministers that the Omicron variant now makes up 90% of cases here in Northern Ireland, however, it has been reported that no further changes are expected in regards to restrictions.

Monday (27 December) seen the latest restrictions imposed by Stormont come into affect in Northern Ireland where nightclubs were forced to shut, table service resumed in bars and restaurants, and other restrictions around social gatherings and workplaces were applied.

Despite the welcomed announcement for no further restrictions, businesses within the travel industry and hospitality industry have hit out at the lack of funding and help for both industries surrounding the detrimental effect the covid restrictions are having on business.

In mid December, Colum McLornan, owner of friendship travel, pleaded with Stormont ministers to aid the industry financially as “It’s a very worrying time for the travel industry and we ask the Department of the Economy to offer our sector dedicated support in the coming days.”

Anita have also continued to rally for support for the sector.
