NI Holidaymakers Currently in Spain WILL Have to Quarantine for 14 Days

Holidaymakers returning from Spain to Northern Ireland are facing an unexpected 14-day quarantine after the government suddenly announced that it was closing the travel corridor between the two countries

In a blow to NI holidaymakers currently in Spain, the government announced that it was closing the air bridge between the two countries over the weekend – meaning that anyone currently enjoying a sunny break in Spain will have to self-isolate for 14 days on return to Northern Ireland.

The government took the decision to close the air bridge after an increase in Covid-19 cases was reported in Spain – a spike of more than 900 new daily infections for the past two days.

The government’s decision will comes as a shock to holidaymakers currently in Spain, who jetted off for their long-awaited summer break once it was confirmed that they would not have to quarantine on arrival back in Northern Ireland.

Health Minister Robin Swann said: “The decision to remove Spain from the exempt list was not taken lightly.

“I have always said I will move swiftly and take the necessary action to ensure our citizens are protected.

“I have spoken with my counterparts across the UK today and we agree that the recent upsurge in new positive cases in different parts of Spain are a cause for concern.

“As of midnight tonight, anyone returning or visiting Northern Ireland from Spain, including its islands, will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

“I will continue to monitor the situation in Spain and other countries, and make the changes to the regulations when necessary.”

In a statement, the NI Department of Health said: “The decision to introduce a quarantine period has been taken following medical and scientific advice. The new regulations will take effect from midnight, therefore anyone arriving after that time must self-isolate.”
