New Transit Requirements for the USA

Conditions of travel by air transport with entry, stopover or transit in the USA have changed since the US reopened on November 8

Conditions of travel by air transport with entry, stopover or transit in the USA have changed since the US reopened on November 8.

Now, the United States are imposing a complete vaccination status.

Flights connecting with France from and to French Polynesia will once again transit through the USA from November. Thus, it will be up to each traveller to comply with American regulations when entering, stopping over or transiting on the American territory.

Travellers who wish to enter the United States by air are required to show full proof of vaccination against COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States from a foreign country, even for a transit.

Any non-citizen, non-immigrant entering the United States from a foreign country

Note: This requirement does NOT apply to children under the age of 18.

Vaccinated people must provide:

  • a negative result of an RT-PCR test of less than 72 hours or an antigenic test of less than 48 hours
  • a proof of full vaccination for the USA: 2 weeks after the last injection for 2-dose vaccines / 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine

Warning: the vaccination status considered to be complete for the French national territory (1 week after the last dose) is no longer sufficient for the United States. Furthermore, to enter French national territory with a single-dose vaccine, the vaccination schedule is considered complete 28 days after the injection.

  • In addition, travellers who have contracted Covid-19 also need two doses to be considered fully vaccinated.
  • A sworn statement to abide by regulations relating to entry into the national metropolitan territory (orange zone country), attesting to the absence of symptoms and not having been in contact with anyone infected by Covid.
  • ALL travellers over 2 years of age travelling to, stopping over, or transiting in the USA must also provide a certificate to be downloaded from the American website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/ fr-proof-negative-test.html

Unvaccinated adults will not be allowed to enter, stop over or transit in the United States.
Some exceptions exist and are listed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. However, in this case, unvaccinated travellers must also have a receipt from the High Commission validating the compelling reason for travel a negative RT-PCR or antigenic test result within 24 hours.

Unvaccinated minors 12 years of age and older, travelling alone or accompanying an unvaccinated person but falling under the exceptions provided in the U.S. regulations, must have:

  • a negative RT-PCR test result less than 72 hours old or an antigenic test result less than 48 hours old
  • a receipt from the High Commission validating the compelling reason.for travel
  • Minors accompanying a vaccinated person must present a negative RT-PCR test result less than 72 hours old or an antigenic test result less than 48 hours old
