New Eastern Mediterranean-Inspired Restaurant Opens in Cathedral Quarter

An exciting new restaurant, bringing the tastes and rich cultural mix of the Eastern Med, Middle East and North Africa has opened at the heart of Belfast’s burgeoning Cathedral Quarter

Owned by husband and wife team, Tony and Andrea O’Neill, who also own and operate the Italian inspired restaurant/cichetti bar Coppi, a magnet for Belfast foodies, also in Saint Anne’s Square.

Their latest venture is a fun and vibrant open-plan eatery serving modern day Eastern Mediterranean-inspired food and cocktails.

The menu is comprised of lots of small plate dishes, designed to share, such as baba ganoush with harissa salsa, duck cigars with cinnamon, raisin and capers, flatbreads of bbq chicken, chilli hummus, chermoula and yogurt. Vegans are well catered for too with a full menu of delicious dishes.

Speaking after the official launch event last week, Buba co-owner Tony O’Neill said: “We are thrilled to be opening Buba. We want to keep pushing the envelope by introducing not just Greek and Turkish influences, but also the exciting and perhaps less familiar spices and recipes of North Africa and the Middle East.

“There is no doubt that Belfast now offers a superb range of top quality restaurants producing fantastic cuisine. Buba will be a unique and tasty addition to the rich mix.”

Andrea O’Neill, co-owner added: “This represents a major investment in the future of Belfast. We are confident, even in these uncertain economic times, that adventurous food lovers or even the merely curious will relish a menu that is truly delicious.

“We have provided much-needed jobs in refurbishing our premises and will initially create 20 full and part-time posts and we’re delighted about this.”

Luke McClelland, surveyor, CBRE commented: “This announcement is fantastic news for the city centre and in particular the Cathedral Quarter, which has been experiencing significant regeneration and development.”

“Buba is an exciting and unique addition to the thriving food and drink scene in Belfast, and will further strengthen the offering at Saint Anne’s Square.”
