Hong Kong Visitors Advised to Remain Vigilant

"Remain Vigilant" warns FCO as Hong Kong protests blockade airport

The FCO is warning visitors to “remain vigilant” as Hong Kong protests continue and to move into a place of safety in areas of protest.

“You should be prepared that the situation around protests and public gatherings could change quickly, with the potential for significant violence.”

It has issues a warning of “disruption to transport” and the “possibility of protests lapping into public spaces such as shopping centres”.

“Demonstrations may lead to sections of the city being closed off and strikes by public transport workers will significantly disrupt services.

“In recent protests, bus routes, MTR stations, the Airport Express and the Hong Kong Macao Ferry Terminal have temporarily suspended operations without warning.”

After protestors blockade the city’s International Airport, 25 flights had been cancelled and commuters are experiencing traffic delays.

“The AA (Airport Authority) has been working with relevant organisations to maintain flight operations to their best ability in order to clear the backlog of passengers.

“The AA condemns actions that blocked some entrances and exits to the terminals, obstructed traffic to the airport which affected passengers’ journeys, and damaged some airport equipment.”

Hong Kong airport issued a statement at 6pm on September 1st, saying the roads are “severely obstructed” and the Airport Express was still suspended.

By around 10pm, the congestion was reported to have eased: “Traffic between the airport and the city gradually resumed to normal in early evening,” Hong Kong airport said.

Travellers who have flight arrangements organised, are advised to check their flight schedules with the airlines or contact their travel agents, and to allow additional time to get to and from the airport to allow for disruptions. The FCO also advise that the general public avoid wearing black, so as not to be confused with protestors, and the remain sensible and vigilant while in the city.
