So far there are no reports of casualties but several aftershocks have been reported.
Last month Crete was hit by a 5.8-magnitude quake.
There have also been reports of rockslides across the island.
Greece is hit from time to time by earthquakes as it lies on a network of geological faultlines.
Holidaymakers on the island are advised to follow the advice of local authorities.
