Heidi Alexander Retains Position as UK Transport Secretary

Previously appointed Transport Secretary under Keir Starmer's leadership back in November 2024,  it was confirmed last night that Alexander will continue in her position

Heidi Alexander has retained her position of Secretary of State for Transport in Andy Burnham’s cabinet.

Following Andy Burnham’s appointment as UK Prime Minister yesterday (20th July 2026), all eyes have been fixed firmly on 10 Downing Street as the new prime minister shapes up his cabinet.

Previously appointed Transport Secretary under Keir Starmer’s leadership back in November 2024,  it was confirmed last night that Alexander will continue in her position amidst Andy Burnham’s cabinet reshuffle.

Alexander took to X to confirm her continuation as Transport Secretary, highlighting,  “Delighted to be re-appointed Transport Secretary. First rail fares freeze in 30 years. 9 train operators in public ownership. 5 more coming. A new Road Safety Strategy. Northern Powerhouse Rail on its way. Free bus travel for kids this August. Lots done. Lots more to do!”

In addition, the role of Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport remains with Lisa Nandy, with inbound tourism also falling under Nandy’s department.
