Germany has today (2 December) announced that from early next year, full-vaccination status could be mandatory to enter venues such as non-essential shops and bars.

Angela Merkel, chancellor, announced to the media in attendance these new measures following a hasty meeting with the leaders of Germany’s 16 states to discuss the rapid increase of Covid-19 infections throughout the country.

These measures mean that only people who are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 will be able to enter shops and hospitality venues. It has also been agreed that bars and nightclubs will shut in areas with more than 350 cases of coronavirus infection, per 100,000 people over the course of 7 days.

Germany are also set to announce tighter contact measures for unvaccinated people. Members of unvaccinated households will only be able to meet with two people from another household in a bid to reduce the strain placed on German hospitals.

Tourist travel to Germany is still currently allowed as long as the individual is either fully vaccinated, or of Germany residency. No un-vaccinated travel from the UK is accepted unless within German exception.

Mandatory vaccination is planned to come into action from February onwards, however, this is still yet to be confirmed.
