Latest statistics from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office show an increase by visitors from the UK (registered as overnight stays) of 5.7 per cent for the month of July, compared to 2017.
This is the seventh consecutive rise in a row for the UK in 2018 and follows the recent announcement for Germany’s half year results (January-June 2018) of a 4.5 per cent increase in international overnights. So Destination Deutschland is a hot destination, in more ways than one.
Germany’s so-called holiday regions have risen particularly strongly this summer. Brandenburg – just 40 minutes from Berlin, a land of rivers, ancient forests and home to Europe’s unique largest water landscape, has shown an increase of 13 per cent in the first half of 2018.
Saxony – Germany’s cultural heart and steeped in cultural history – attracted an increase of 12 per cent in overnight stays. Germany’s largest state, idyllic Bavaria with its chic cities, alps and picture book villages showed an international incoming increase of eight per cent as did the coastal region of Mecklenburg – Western Pommerania, gateway to the Wadden Sea and Hanseatic towns.
The neighbouring coastal state of Schleswig-Holstein with its alluring islands and vast nature parks has reported an increase of seven per cent. A similar increase of seven per cent has been reported in Hesse which offers the slick city life of Frankfurt and where fairytales can be found.
Beatrix Haun, Director of the German National Tourist Office UK and Ireland said: “The UK is one of the most important source markets for Germany, regularly achieving second place worldwide and we are delighted by the continuing increase in overnight stays by visitors from the UK.
“Just when you think you know Germany, there is something new to discover, whether it’s on the coast, through Germany’s vast natural landscapes, a city you’ve never visited or exploring one of Germany 25,000 castles, parks and gardens… travel experiences in Germany can offer something new every time”.
