France has shut all bars in the city of Marseille, while others across the country are being told to close at 10pm to combat Covid spike.
The closures were announced as part of a series of nationwide tough new measures.
Bars in Paris, Lille and Grenoble will also have to close at 10pm.
Gatherings of more than 10 people will also be banned.
A temporary ban on renting party venues, including for weddings, was also announced.
The complete closure of bars, cafés and restaurants in Marseille will last for a minimum of two weeks.
Mask wearing is already mandatory in public places in France, but there have been concerns about people flouting social distancing advice.
Young people have in particular been criticised for gathering in large groups, often without masks, at bars and cafés in the capital.
