England To Scrap Follow-Up PCR Tests

From January 11th, people who test positive on a lateral flow test will no longer need to complete a follow-up PCR test

In England, follow-up PCR tests are set to be axed from January 11.

These new covid-testing rules mean that people who test positive on a lateral flow test will no longer need to complete a follow-up PCR test.

Those who test positive will still be required to isolate for at least seven days. However, this self-isolation period will begin from the date of their positive lateral flow result.

This change will result in a cut of isolation time, as lateral flow test results are typically shown within 30 minutes. Whereas, awaiting PCR test results typically takes a couple of days.

This will also ease the demand for PCR tests, as in recent months, people have struggled to get a PCR test time-slot due to the rapid spread of the Omicron Variant.

Currently, there has been no change to Northern Ireland’s COVID-19 testing requirements. Those with a positive lateral flow result are still required to take a follow-up PCR.
