Emirates Celebrates Female Film Directors to Mark International Women’s Day

Ladybird among movies to feature onboard during March

In recognition of the significance of International Women’s Day on March 8th, Emirates is featuring more than 120* female-directed films on its inflight entertainment system, ice.

While Emirates shows movies directed by women onboard all year round, the airline specifically wanted to celebrate the women that are integral to great movie making by creating a dedicated folder on ice, featuring a wide selection of brilliant movies from Hollywood and around the world.

For the month of March, movies featured onboard will include Oscar winners such as The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow) and Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola); Ladybird, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, Unbroken (Angelina Jolie) and Mamma Mia! (Phyllida Lloyd).

Enda Corneille, Country Manager for Emirates in Ireland said: “In recognition of the many talented women who contribute so significantly to the world of cinema, we decided to create a separate channel of entertainment  onboard our flights that would highlight the incredible work of female directors from around the world. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and this year, Emirates is putting the spotlight on cultural accomplishments.”

The Emirates Group values diversity and inclusion employing more than 150 nationalities across a range of different business functions including senior management and executive roles, marketing, HR, aircraft engineering and maintenance, pilots and cabin crew.

Women are very much a part of the Emirates success story, both in Ireland and globally. Emirates’ first senior appointment in Ireland was Margaret Shannon, who had held a number of senior positions in the travel industry before being appointed inaugural country manager for Ireland in 2012. Margaret lead the team in Dublin for the launch of the Dublin – Dubai service, which has proved one of the most successful launches of recent times.
