E. coli Concerns Prompt Temporary Closure of Two Beaches in Tenerife

In a precautionary move to safeguard public health, two popular beaches in southern Tenerife, Playa de Troya I and El Puertito, have been temporarily closed due to abnormal levels of E. coli detected in the water. The announcement was made by Adeje Town Hall, which has issued a bathing ban effective immediately.

The decision follows routine water quality tests that revealed increased levels of the bacteria, prompting local authorities to activate protocols for beach closure, public notification, and continuous monitoring. This development was reported by Canarian Weekly.

This closure mirrors a similar situation at Granadilla de Abona, where access to La Jaquita Beach in El Médano was restricted after tests also indicated elevated E. coli levels.

To address the situation, fresh water samples have been collected by the Municipal Water Laboratory, with results expected within the next 24 hours. Authorities will decide on lifting the bans based on these findings.

In a formal statement, the council emphasized that this measure is preventive. “We will reopen the beaches as soon as water quality levels are deemed safe for swimming,” the notice assured.

Meanwhile, both tourists and residents are urged to avoid entering the waters and to pay attention to any posted warnings. The safety of beachgoers remains a top priority as officials work to resolve the issue swiftly.
