Dublin Airport is moving forward with plans to develop an upgraded viewing facility for the public, following the submission of additional information to Fingal County Council regarding a proposal by daa. This initiative aims to improve the existing informal viewing area known as “The Mound” on Old Airport Road.
The proposal, spearheaded by daa, seeks to transform the current site into a more structured and accessible space for aircraft enthusiasts. The project will include the construction of a free-to-access facility funded by daa, as part of its commitment to engaging with the local community.
In response to Fingal County Council’s request, daa has provided further details on the project, including plans to relocate bicycle parking, specifics on construction materials, and clarifications on the inclusion of certain amenities.
The new facility promises a comfortable and secure environment for plane spotters, offering unobstructed views of Dublin Airport’s south runway and cross-wind runway. The redevelopment will replace the existing grassy mound with a dedicated car park featuring 22 spaces, including those for individuals with reduced mobility and families. Additionally, bike parking, an elevated covered platform with seating, and solar-powered lighting will be part of the enhancements.
Gary McLean, Managing Director of Dublin Airport, emphasised the significance of the project, stating, “Aircraft observation facilities are a feature of airports around the world, and we want to get on and build this as soon as possible. The public reaction to our proposal, which we’d pay for, has been incredibly positive and people really want it.”
McLean highlighted the area’s cultural importance, noting that visiting “The Mound” is a cherished tradition for local families. “This new facility would make it safer and more enjoyable for users, and we think it’s a facility that the local community will really enjoy,” he added.
Dublin Airport looks forward to collaborating with the planning authority to deliver this eagerly anticipated amenity, promising a safe and enjoyable experience for plane enthusiasts of all ages for years to come.
