Breaking the Hostel Stigma- The 1M North Coast Accommodation That’s Changing Opinions

A new concept in accommodation, which redefines the hostel experience and creates a sense of ‘natural balance’ for guests, has opened on Northern Ireland’s north coast

A new concept in accommodation, which redefines the hostel experience and creates a sense of ‘natural balance’ for guests, has opened on Northern Ireland’s north coast.
Located near Ballycastle, Stay Lagom is a fully renovated rectory, dating back to the early 1800s, which now offers bespoke, premium, communal-style accommodation for up to 29 residents on its 3000m/sq site.
Bought in 2017 by the Ballycastle-based Ward family, Stay Lagom represents an investment of 1M with 18 local business and craftsmen involved in its six year restoration. The new venture has also created 2 full and 8 part-time jobs.
The name ‘Lagom’ comes from the Swedish philosophy that all things in life have a natural balance and encourages individuals to walk the line between too much and too little to discover contentment.
Unlike traditional hotel, guest house or airbnb type accommodation, Lagom is described as a ‘lodging inspired by travellers, for travellers’, with its ethos firmly rooted in balance, sustainability, and mindfulness.
According to Jordan Ward, who led the ambitious renovation project, Stay Lagom differentiates itself by meeting the needs of the 21st century traveller, including the new era of on-the-go professionals or ‘digital nomads’.
“Traditional hostels are usually associated with budget travellers and backpackers, but Stay Lagom operates on a completely different level, creating a luxury haven for today’s digital nomads, seasoned explorers and spirited youth.
“In a post pandemic world, where remote working and wanderlust combine, Stay Lagom caters to the needs of on-the-go professionals seeking a ‘workation’ where business and play converges.  Here they can escape by combining the sanctuary of the north coast with the demands of working life.”
Open to families, individuals or groups, guests can choose from private rooms, futuristic pods or separate self-contained lodges.
All guests have access to a communal space which includes a fully equipped kitchen, spacious lounge area, superfast broadband and smart heating and lighting.
Jordan added:
“Stay Lagom offers a new era of comfort, community, and inclusivity, perfect for those seeking a vibrant atmosphere combined with the security of well-designed private spaces. By taking co-living and co-working to a new level, this is a space where the boundaries between work and leisure merge perfectly.
The Ward family is also working in partnership with the local community and other tourism businesses to ensure the venture offers wider benefits.
“Whether remote working or simply relaxing, Ballycastle and the north coast provide access to the local culture, cuisine and attractions which enhances and completes the experience for all our guests.”
