Belfast Restaurant Week, held in October, has revealed significant benefits for the local hospitality industry, according to a recent independent survey by CARD Group Research & Insight. The survey, conducted among participating venue managers and owners, found that nearly 80 percent of the venues experienced increased foot traffic, while approximately 62 percent reported a rise in revenues during the week-long event. Notably, for those venues that saw revenue growth, the average increase reached an impressive 24 percent.
Guillaume Rabillat, owner of 44 Hill St, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Belfast Restaurant Week is an event that our industry eagerly anticipates each year. It offers a unique opportunity to welcome both new and returning customers while showcasing our quality offerings.” Rabillat emphasized the importance of fostering community and customer loyalty through unique experiences rather than just promotional offers.
Organised by Belfast City’s three business improvement districts—LQ BID, CQ BID, and Belfast One—this year’s Restaurant Week marked a shift from a price-centric approach to a focus on the rich culinary experiences available in the city. Chris McCracken, Managing Director of LQ BID, noted the positive reception of this new format, citing that 80 percent of venues credited this approach for their involvement. The week featured 105 diverse experiences across 59 hospitality locations, from tasting menus to cocktail masterclasses.
Damien Corr, Manager at CQ BID, highlighted the new opportunities created for the hospitality sector through the innovative format of the event. He acknowledged the challenges the industry faces, such as rising operational costs and staffing shortages, but asserted that Belfast’s food scene boasts exceptional talent and produce.
The CARD research also revealed a demographic shift, with over half of participating venues attracting new clientele during the event. A wide variety of venues took part, including popular spots like Berts Jazz Bar, Mourne Seafood, and The Europa Hotel.
Martina Connolly, CEO of Belfast One, praised the resilience of Belfast’s food scene, pointing to the creativity of new venues and the collaboration among the three BIDs to support the hospitality sector. A consumer survey revealed that 89 percent of attendees would not have visited a restaurant had it not been for the event, further underscoring its impact on the local dining landscape.
