Aviation Industry Hopeful that New EU Traffic Light System Can Lift Gloom

Many in aviation industry say full adoption of new EU traffic light system would help enable recovery of travel sector

Airlines and airports are arguing that the full adoption of the EU’s traffic light system would be a positive first step on the road to recovery for the strike travel sector.

The new system grades regions as green, orange and red, according to their Covid infection rates, with green denoting the lowest risk and red the highest.

Neil Sorahan, Ryanair’s Chief Financial Officer, has called on the Republic of Ireland to allow free movement for those from green and orange regions in line with the rest of the EU.

This was the original idea behind the system when the EU first proposed it in September.

The EU has also said that screening could be used to ease, or even eliminate, the need for restrictions to be imposed on passengers from red zones.
