Airports, Airlines and Air Traffic Control Disruption : What You Need To Know

As recovery from the Air Traffic Control disruption continues, customers are being advised to check with airlines for information on their flight status

After a significant disruption to the UK’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) yesterday (29 August 2023), airlines and airports are warning travellers of possible delays.

According to aviation analytics firm, Cirium, a total of 790 flights were cancelled yesterday departing from UK airports.

Roughly 785 flights arriving into the United Kingdom were also cancelled, equating to around 27% of all arrivals.

As a knock-on effect of the ATC Disruption, airlines are warning customers of possible delays as operations resume.

Airports have took to social media platforms encouraging travellers to check with the airline directly for information on flight status.

Belfast International Airport clarified in a statement on twitter: “Further delays and cancellations can be expected today as airline schedules recover from the air traffic control technical issues yesterday. If you are due to travel please contact your airline directly for information on your flight status.”

Dublin Airport also issued a comment, advising: “Passengers intending to fly from Dublin Airport today are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline, before travelling to the airport. Passengers needing to re-book flights are encouraged to do so via their airline’s app or website.”

As recovery from this disruption continues, customers are being advised to check with airlines for information on their flight status.

Jet2 issued a statement yesterday evening, highlighting: “Due to the technical fault affecting the UK’s National Air Traffic Services, which has impacted all airlines, all Jet2.com flights departing and returning to the UK are expected to experience significant delays.”

Further going on to add that, the airline is reviewing Tuesday’s programme “as the situation evolves,” and that Jet2 will “update the customers in due course.”

Jet2 customers due to travel today (Tuesday 29 August) should travel to the airport as normal unless the airline advise otherwise.

TUI have also released an update in regards to the ATC Flight disruption and options available for customers.

The update reads: “If you have been affected by Air Traffic Control Disruptions, there are a few options available to you.”

TUI are offering customers affected the option to amend their holiday fee free to any other TUI package on sale, a full refund if no you longer wish to travel. Travellers who request a full refund will also receive a future holiday voucher.

EasyJet clarified that they will be providing customers on cancelled flights with the option to transfer their service free of charge or receive a full refused.

Further stating: “The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority and while these circumstances are outside of our control, we would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused and to reassure customers that we are doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the disruption.”
