Outdoor experts at Millets have revealed the best dog-friendly hiking trails in Northern Ireland to explore in 2026.

1 – Giant’s Gate and Causeway Coast Circular, with an overall score of 6.92/10

Giant’s Gate and Causeway Coast Circular has been named Northern Ireland’s best dog-friendly hike. The Giant’s Causeway is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the world, featuring 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by ancient volcanic activity that jut out into the Atlantic. But this longer circular route takes you well beyond the famous rocks and out along a rugged, dramatic coastline that most tourists never see. Walkers report it’s a lovely walk for dogs, with plenty to sniff and explore along the way.

2 –  Tollymore Forest and Drinns Circular in County Down, totalling 6.31/10

Following in second is the Tollymore Forest and Drinns Circular in County Down. Tollymore Forest has been used as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series. And once you’re among the ancient trees, winding alongside the River Shimna and crossing old stone bridges, it’s not hard to see why a fantasy series came calling. For dogs, it’s heaven, with stony paths, rushing water, and dense woodland. However, make sure your dog has the stamina (and enough water) for this 8.8-mile route before you set off.

3 –  Cavehill Circular, with a score of 5.15/10

Cavehill Circular completes the top three, totalling 5.15/10. Cavehill is Belfast’s backyard, and a proper hill walk on the edge of the city, with stunning views across Belfast and out to the Irish Sea from the top. Walkers describe it as a little “more than just a dander”, but this means there’s a real sense of achievement when you reach the summit. It’s a popular spot with dog walkers (clocking up over 1,000 reviews), and you’re guaranteed to meet plenty of hikers and four-legged friends along the way. Although the climb is steady, you still need to be prepared, and supportive footwear and plenty of water are well worth packing.
