The City of Champions: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Did you know this city in Pennsylvania is the only place in the US to wear the same colour for its sports?

Pittsburgh is a fantastic destination for sports enthusiasts, offering a rich history, passionate fan base, and diverse sports scene. As the NFL returns and Pittsburgh comes alive with the iconic colours of the Steelers, we look at reasons every sports fan should head to the city.

Cheer on the Steelers

One of the most recognised NFL teams in the world, Pittsburgh is home to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And there’s no better time to wear the famed yellow and black memorabilia to cheer the team on than in autumn. Join the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on the South Side and enjoy city views with every touchdown.

Pray for the Pittsburgh Penguins

For ice-hockey fans, the Pittsburgh Penguins offer top-tier NHL action at the PPG Paints Arena. With stars like Sidney Crosby and a history of Stanley Cup victories, the Penguins games are guaranteed to be filled with action.

Take Pride in the Pittsburgh Pirates

Sports fanatics should head to a famed Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park and watch the sun go down over the Pittsburgh skyline and Roberto Clemente Bridge. Nestled along the Allegheny River, PNC Park has one of the most beautiful views in baseball, whilst offering hours of entertainment. Guests should look out for the game cam for five minutes of fame. They even have giant pierogi races around the field in between rounds.

Chase your dreams in Pittsburgh

Celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, the annual Pittsburgh Marathon sees runners venture through the city whilst taking in the diverse skyline. Inviting travellers to embark on a journey of personal transformation, the excitement of the surrounding neighbourhoods are guaranteed to help runners along.

Game day traditions

Primanti Bros

Serving hungry locals since 1933, this delicacy derived from workers being able to eat with one hand and drive with the other. Expect queues out the door at the Primanti Bros and a mile high sandwich that consists of meat, provolone cheese, tomatoes, homemade coleslaw and fries between two slices of fresh Italian bread. No trip to Pittsburgh is complete without one. On game days guests can expect queues around the original venue in the Strip District. For those not attending, expect games to be played in the establishments.

Pamela’s Diner

Said to be the best breakfast in the Burgh’ since 1980’s, Pamela’s Diner is not one to be missed. A firm favourite among locals and travellers alike (including Barack Obama), the old fashioned diner is the hearty meal everyone needs before exploring a new city. With comforts such as homemade hash, speciality hotcakes, waffles and omelettes, there’s something for everyone’s taste. Expect pretty in pink decor and quick service with a smile.

Tailgate

No game day is complete without a tailgating experience. Stage AE at Acrisure Stadium boasts live music, food and drink specials, cornhole, ladder ball and the chance to win official Steelers prizes ahead of kick off.

Roberto Clemente Museum

Drafted by the Pirates in 1954, Roberto Clemente grew to become the greatest baseball player of his time. During this period, the struggle for social justice had reached every part of our country, and every ballpark. In his 18-year career, he received every possible award given in Major League Baseball. Off the field, he built a reputation as a humanitarian. Dedicated to one of baseball’s greatest players, this museum celebrates his life and career. Located in the former Engine House No. 25, this can be found in Lawrenceville.
