Step Back in Time and Discover Setouchi’s Ancient Vine Bridges

These are the incredible vine bridges of Iya Valley in Tokushima prefecture, nestled in beautiful wilderness.

Imagine you’re a twelfth century Japanese warrior, hiding in thick forest after a devastating defeat. Together with your fellow fugitives, you build a makeshift bridge out of vines to cross over the river and put distance between you and the enemy.

Now imagine it’s 2023 and that bridge is still functioning (at least, the current incarnation of it – these bridges are reconstructed every three years and these days there are steel wire supports). These are the incredible vine bridges of Iya Valley in Tokushima prefecture, nestled in beautiful wilderness. Navigate your way through the dense and unspoilt forest to find “Iya no Kazurabashi“, the longest of the dozen-or-so bridges said to have been once functioning, and “Oku Iya Niju-Kazurabashi, or the so-called “husband and wife” pair of vine suspension bridges.

Valley Hikes and Valuable Heritage

These incredible bridges are a testament to both ingenuity and engineering, and over time have become integral parts of the local environment. Come April, the Iya no Kazurabashi is bathed in lilac, as delicate flowers bloom along the wisteria vines that cling to the bridge. Indeed, being so finely attuned to the surrounding nature, these bridges symbolise seasonal beauty throughout the year.

The region of Tokushima in Setouchi has much to offer: rugged cliffs, dense forest, winding gorges, picturesque hamlets, and indulgent hot springs. Make the Iya Valley bridges your destination but make sure to enjoy everything on the way. It’s also an ideal destination for a cycling tour – just remember to relax those weary muscles in one of the area’s superlative hot springs.

Access and Opening Times

The vine bridges are located close to Oboke in Tokushima Prefecture.
By car, take Route 32 to Oboke before turning east on Route 45 into the western Iya Valley. From central Takamatsu city or Tokushima city, it will take you approx. 1hr 45 minutes to reach Oboke and a further 20 minutes to Kazurabashi Bridge or 50 minutes to Ochiai Village.

April – June: 8:00 until 18:00
July – August: 7:30 until 18:30
September – March: 8:00 until 17:00

While the bridges cannot be crossed at night, the Iya no Kazurabashi bridge is illuminated at night, so an evening trip is still worthwhile.
