Spring into Armagh at the Apple Blossom Festival

The story of Armagh is a tale of myths, turbulence and the strongholds of Ulster ruled by ancient Kings

Legend has it that Macha – the goddess of war and fertility gave the city its name. As centuries passed, today you can capture the essence of a city steeped in Christianity – the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland. With a beautiful Georgian inspired city centre full of museums, an Observatory and Planetarium, the Robinson Library and buildings of note surrounded by an impressive green space of the Mall, there are many opportunities to visit and explore.

Visit Armagh this spring and enjoy a great offering of events and activities. Enjoy Apple Blossom weekend in May and savour great tastes and experiences. Celebrating its orchard county status, Armagh will mark the start of this year’s growing season from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th May, set against the breath-taking pink backdrop of 4000 flower filled acres of land. Try Bramley goodies, apple juice, cider, tarts and a large dollop of enjoyment and a great day out for all.

During the weekend you can experience events such as “From Blossom to Griddle” set in a traditional cottage (Dan Winters Cottage) and packed with tasting experiences. Feast on soda and potato apple bread cooked over a turf fire, the traditional way. Apple tart and fresh cream is available from Friday – Sunday along with tours of the cottage.

Long Meadow Cider company opens its gates for “Art in the Orchard” on 11th May. This is a chance for budding artists, beginners or those further along to get into the orchard and learn about line, colour and form and put brush to canvas – all fortified by apple goodies! Long Meadow will also open for visitors on their orchard tours on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can take part in a guided tour and see how the cider production.

Crannagael House, the site of the first Bramley apple grown in Armagh welcomes visitors to “Bramley Beginnings.” Savour the sights and smells of the orchard and catch the beautiful view in the middle of orchard county. Seasonal produce and goods produced at the house will be available to enjoy.

Ardress House, a local National Trust property throws open its doors each Sunday in May for “Apple Blossom Sunday”, celebrating apple treats and activities for all the family. Quails at the FE McWilliam Gallery in Banbridge will offer an amazing afternoon tea during the weekend.

Halo Woodturning invite you to try this local traditional craft and you have a chance to make a pen from beautiful local woods to take home. Bee keeping, so important to the life cycle of the orchard will also be discussed and who knows, you might even be encouraged to take up a new hobby!
