The former ‘Steel City’ is looking forward to welcoming back UK and Ireland travellers to its urban cityscape now that travel to the USA is back on. With an exciting new hotel opening, several new attractions, and not to mention a recent influx of innovative dining options, there’s lots of enticing new reasons to visit Pittsburgh next year.

What’s new in 2022

The Landing Hotel at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh will open in summer 2022 with 219 luxurious guest rooms and panoramic views of the city from the North Shore. Connecting directly to the casino, guests will benefit from easy access to its restaurants, bars and entertainment venue, the latter of which hosts live musicians and DJs all year round. The central location of The Landing Hotel will also put guests steps away from key attractions including the Carnegie Science Centre, The Andy Warhol Museum and for sports fans, Heinz Field and PNC Park. Room rates TBC.

Space robotics company, Astrobotic, will open the Moonshot Museum next summer where visitors will be able to experience a real spacecraft being built in addition to hands-on lunar exploration activities. Pennsylvania’s first museum dedicated exclusively to space, the feature attraction will be a large window through which visitors can watch real lunar landers and rovers being built and readied to fly to the Moon. Museum visitors will experience the thrill of spaceflight up close and learn about possible career paths in the thriving $425 billion space industry through interactive exhibits, educational programmes, and specially curated space experiences.

Puttshack, the leading curators of interactive mini golf experiences, will open a new US location in Pittsburgh in winter 2022. Located in the recently renovated Strip District Terminal in Pittsburgh’s bustling Strip District neighbourhood and retaining much of its 1920’s historic exterior, Puttshack will join the transformed pedestrian-focused area alongside a host of retail, dining and office outlets. Golfers will be able to play against friends on tech-driven mini golf courses whilst enjoying a globally inspired dining menu and fully stocked cocktail bar.

What you missed in 2021

Launched in 2021, the Pittsburgh Bike(+) Pledge continues development into 2022. Preparing its streets for an influx of tourists on two wheels, the city’s introduction of Neighbourways will consist of reduced traffic speed optimized for bicycles and offering a safer, more comfortable alternative to navigate the city’s streets.

This autumn, Pittsburgh welcomed Golden Age Beer Co., a new larger-focused brewery in Homestead. Golden Age Beer Co. is the brainchild of local businessman Pete Kurzweg who currently owns three popular breweries and bars in the city – The Independent Brewing Company, Lorelei and Hidden Harbor. Focusing solely on European-style lagers, diners will be able to enjoy deliciously fresh pours in the bar or beer garden alongside tasty food and live music. The taproom is expected to open by the end of this year.

Locals in the bustling Hazelwood neighbourhood also welcomed the opening of three new breweries. Supported by The Progress Fund, a non-profit community development financial institution, the purpose-built warehouse includes separate spaces for each brewery with enough room to brew on site and complete with a shared tasting room, half an acre beer garden and a rooftop deck.

A new mini food hall, Galley Bakery Square, opened its doors in summer 2021 in East Liberty. Home to four restaurants, diners can enjoy comfort food at GG’s Café, fresh Asian cuisine at Somi, hearty American dishes at Bubba’s and delicious pasta at City Fresh. There are indoor and outdoor seating areas as well as a bar serving local craft beers and innovative cocktails including a peanut butter and chocolate old fashioned and berry plum margarita.

The Industrialist, a 124-room boutique hotel, opened in downtown Pittsburgh in May 2021. Rooms pay homage to Pittsburgh’s unique character, decorated with brass fixtures and warm colours, and the twelve suites boast views of the winding Monongahela River. Guests can be entertained in the social lounge or modern restaurant – The Rebel Room – which serves American fare and craft cocktails, or explore all of the city’s best sights on the doorstep.
