Perfect for couples and families, Offaly is a great spot for family and friends reunions this summer, being so accessible to most parts of the country. Here are our top three recommendations for Summer 2022.

The wonderful thing about the Slieve Bloom Mountains (besides being the most unspoilt and uncongested mountains in the country) is that you’ll find trails to suit every ability; from the experienced hiker to the casual stroller.  Here you will be rewarded with spectacular views stretching across the midlands of Ireland and on a clear cloud free day you can see the four highest points of each of Ireland’s four provinces.

There are twenty one marked walks ranging from one hour to four hours, as well as an Ecco Walk and for those who really fancy getting off the beaten track check out The Slieve Bloom Way, covering a distance of 60km over three days.

All nature lovers will appreciate a visit to the Slieve Blooms as they are rich in flora and fauna and as many as sixty five different bird species have been sighted here.

There are also new mountain biking trails and all information is to be found on www.visitoffaly.ie

Transformed from its previous incarnation as a commercial bog where peat was harvested to heat homes around the country, today Lough Boora Discovery Park is home to countless species of birds and wildlife, fish-filled lakes and a permanent exhibition of huge outdoor sculptures. These sculptures give the park an other-worldly feel, created using the old industrial materials of the bog such as locomotives, rail-line and timber, all crafted into magnificent works of art.

With a range off road cycle routes (bicycle hire available on site), walking routes, suitable for most abilities and a fairy avenue this is a perfect day out. There are also still water fishing lakes available as both local and tourist amenities for anglers.

Situated in the middle of a stunning Georgian town, allow yourself plenty of time to explore Birr Castle’s spectacular Gardens, fascinating Science Centre and adventure playground with Ireland’s largest treehouse. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule.

Within the 120 acres you will find the Great Telescope, described as Ireland’s greatest scientific wonder, the world’s tallest box hedges, over 50 champion trees, over 4000 species of plant as well as rivers, lake and waterfalls. There are plenty of trails to do here, including the popular Quest and the also the opportunity to visit the Castle during the summer.(pre-booking essential), onsite café and gift shop.
