ISLAND UPDATES

  • 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GEORGE CROSS MEDAL

2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the people of Malta receiving the George Cross Medal, in recognition of their heroic struggle against repeated and continuous attacks during World War 2. The Siege of Malta saw the nation endure more than 150 days of relentless Second World War bombing that forced its inhabitants to live in underground shelters.

Visitors intrigued by Malta’s war history, will enjoy exploring the Lascaris War Rooms comprising of an underground labyrinth of tunnels and chambers which housed the war headquarters and is now open to the public as a museum.

MALTA ON THE SILVER SCREEN

Malta remains a firm favourite with film production companies. The Maltese coastlines will hit the silver screen this year and will appear in several international productions, from Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World: Dominion starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, to British production Jetski directed by James Nunn, the archipelago continues to attract production teams thanks to its gorgeous landscape.

  • IL-KARNIVAL TA’ MALTA: 25 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCH 2022

Il-Karnival ta’ Malta will take place 25 February, bringing with it five days of exhibits, performances and artistic installations. Visitors attending the carnival programme can visit a photographic exhibition by German photographer Frank Kirchner curated by Antoine Farrugia, a costumes exhibition featuring works from the past years and a live production of Il-Qarċilla, all in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv. The Manoel Theatre, in collaboration with the TOI TOI Collective will also produce a live theatrical show which includes dance, projections and other activities suitable for children, which is being supported by Festivals Malta. Some elements of the programme can also be viewed on the Karnival website.

The traditional Carnival celebrations that include the colourful floats will take place between 20 -22 May

  • L.O.L. SURPRISE! LIVE VIP PARTY: 5 – 17 APRIL 2022

After a successful tour of the UK, L.O.L. SURPRISE! LIVE VIP PARTY will land in Malta this April. It will be the biggest L.O.L. SURPRISE! VIP event of the year and Mallory is already getting ready for the party with her friends, Lady Diva, Royal Bee, Swag and Neonlicious and the dolls have selected their fiercest looks for the occasion.

  • MALTA INTERNATIONAL FIREWORKS FESTIVAL: 17 – 20 – 23 – 30 APRIL 2022

Malta’s annual international fireworks festival returns in April, bringing with it four days of enchanting shows. The event commemorates Malta’s entry in the European Union and is held in Valletta’s Grand Harbour and other locations. To celebrate in true Maltese style, the festival showcases firework displays designed by international and local pyrotechnic companies.

  • ANNIE MAC PRESENTS LOST & FOUND: 1 – 4 JUNE 2022

A standout fixture on the dance music festival scene, Annie Mac’s Lost & Found music festival returns to St Paul’s Bay, Malta to celebrate its sixth anniversary this June with its biggest line-up yet including Camelphat, Prospa, Gordon City and Mike Skinner. With sets from worldwide DJs at several parties including night-long castle raves, daytime beach parties and boat parties, this year’s event promises some exciting artists.

2022 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Malta and Gozo will once again be hosting an eclectic calendar of events throughout 2022 giving visitors more reasons to visit the archipelago whatever the season. The event line-up offers something for all ages and tastes from Nickelodeon’s Treasure Hunt to the BBC Concert Orchestra.
