Like Something Straight Out of a Fairytale

"Heaven on earth" is how Dougie Muir from Stewart Travel describes his experience skiing in Whistler...

One of the ultimate and most truly memorable experiences of my life would have to be when I was fortunate enough to travel to the beautiful Canadian Ski Resorts of Whistler and Blackcombe in British Colombia.

The journey on New Years Eve to Vancouver initially took us through two New Year’s celebrations on the way – first the UK celebration then the Dutch and we even managed to stay up for a third and saw in the bells of the New Canadian Year! This was without a doubt hard going, but we Scots are made of strong stuff – we have the stamina and determination!

The most sensational town of Whistler, was even more fascinating than I ever imagined – just like something straight out of a fairytale – so quaint, glistening in the sun and moonlight making us think we were in a dreamland.

Consistently rated as North America and Canada’s best ski resort, Whistler has it all. There are over 200 trails between the Whistler and Blackcombe mountains, linked by the famous Peak2Peak gondola.

The skiing and snowboarding here is world-class – not to mention the apres ski! Whistler offers a great choice of mountain bars and nightlife to enjoy once you’ve hung up your skis and boots. There’s something special about Whistler that you can’t quite put your finger on… maybe it’s the fun and friendly Canadian attitude?

The Fairmont Chateaux in Whistler was our home for the next ten days and we certainly savoured and enjoyed every moment. The quality of service was truly overwhelmingly outstanding and wow’d us non-stop and the exceptional dining had our tastebuds watering ever evening!

At Fairmont we were able to connect with the beauty of our surroundings and explore our inner wild side! This place really is the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. We made memories here that will last us a lifetime.

Naturally spectacular, Fairmont Chateau Whistler combines classic elegance and a modern alpine setting. I can’t reccommend it enough. It is truly a unique mountain getaway.

From the front door of our hotel we could throw ourselves onto the slopes and ski just a few minutes after leaving the ski club house, even handier when our day on the slopes came to an end, as we skied right back in. How wonderfully simple and seamless that operation was and for sure, conducive to the overall enjoyment and memories we made.

We took the new Peak2Peak gondola which had just opened – awe inspiring and although initially a nerve wracking, whacky journey, what a way to cross those two mountains, towering thousands of feet high with spectacular scenery! Definitely an experience not to be missed.

It was a trip of a lifetime in my opinion and for the avid skier, it totally blows everything else out the water with its pristine piste conditions, fabulous mountain bars and cafes, then of course getting plenty opportunity to sample the rather amazing range of apres ski venues in the evenings – ‘magical’ would best describe it… Heaven on earth!
