How Brits are Powering Through January While Craving The Winter Sun

MSC Cruises have even launched an umbrella with built-in SAD lamps, to give sun-starved Brits a winter boost!

Brits are going to extreme lengths to get some sunshine during the dark winter months, as new research commissioned by MSC Cruises highlights that nearly a quarter sit outside in the cold because it’s sunny, with some even sunbathing in winter clothes. Others take a simpler approach by taking Vitamin D supplements and booking a flight to a sunnier location.

MSC Cruises have developed a solution to the nation’s winter challenges with the ‘Sunbrella’ – a cutting-edge umbrella incorporating SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) lamp technology, letting users shield themselves from the rain while enjoying a warm glow and serotonin lift on even the gloomiest winter days.

From light therapy to the latest TikTok wellness trends, Brits are trying it all to lift their mood during the dark winter months while over three quarters believe that winter has a negative impact on their well-being. Many say they are struggling more with the winter blues now compared to previous years and even seeing sunny destinations on TV gives them a serotonin boost!

It’s important to have things to look forward to in January, from the little things that get the nation through the colder months, like indulging in some chocolate for a mood boost or going for a winter walk, to almost half of people saying that they book a holiday to escape the cold.

Sunshine is the most important thing for beach-ready Brits with 50% looking forward to getting some sun.

Antonio Paradiso, VP of International Sales at MSC Cruises, said: “Our research shows just how much people across the UK are longing for sunshine this winter. The Sunbrella is a playful and eye-catching way to bring that feeling to life, but nothing compares to the real thing.”
