GLISTENING GUIDE TO HONG KONG’S NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS

Every New Year’s Eve, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour becomes the centre of the city’s attention when it hosts the New Year Countdown Celebrations

Every New Year’s Eve, Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour becomes the centre of the city’s attention when it hosts the New Year Countdown Celebrations. A special edition of the multimedia light and sound show ‘A Symphony of Lights’ will synchronise with pyrotechnics set off from the rooftops of prime buildings on Hong Kong Island, lighting up the skies and the harbour.

The extent of the display means it can be seen across the city. See below some of the best places to watch the display and welcome 2023 in Hong Kong.

Avenue of Stars

To be in and amongst the crowds…

The Avenue of Stars which runs along Victoria Harbour provides the best front row seats to the spectacular light display. There’s also the added bonus of getting a selfie with cinematic icons like Bruce Lee and Anita Mui (in statue form). The entire waterfront stretch in Tsim Sha Tsui is packed out every year, and is a great spot with a phenomenal atmosphere.

Tamar Park

For a more laid-back viewing…

Tamar Park on Hong Kong Island has plenty of spots that offer sweeping, uninterrupted views of the harbour. The vast space is a simple walk from Admiralty MTR Station making for easy access. Visitors can take advantage of the sprawling lawns by packing some food, drink and a blanket for relaxed evening viewing.

Signal Hill Garden

To escape the crowds…

Signal Hill Garden in Minden Row, Tsim Sha Tsui, is a small hill overlooking the harbour. Not many tourists know about it, but it is one of the best places to spend the first moments of the New Year. There’s even a pagoda, to protect visitors from the chilly, possibly wet weather that December brings in Hong Kong.

Jardine’s Lookout

For the Instagrammer…

Experienced hikers and photography enthusiasts can head up Jardine’s Lookout in Tai Tam. From the 433m summit, visitors can get a magnificent view of the harbour, as well as the opportunity to snap some incredible shots of the fireworks set against Hong Kong’s awe-inspiring skyline.
