The climate and landscapes of Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza create the ideal conditions for the production of world-class wines. With plenty of picturesque vineyard tours and wine tasting experiences offered at wineries across the archipelago year-round, the Balearic Islands make the perfect destination for wine lovers.

MALLORCA

Mallorca is home to over 70 bodegas offering several variations of grape, the most prolific of which is indigenous Callet, followed by international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Popular wineries include the Bodega Jaume de Puntiró in Santa Maria del Camí, which was the first winery to produce organic vermouth in the Balearic Islands. Jose Luis Ferrer in Binissalem is also widely renowned, particularly for its Crianza 2011 which is served in top restaurants across Paris and Berlin.

MENORCA

Inhabitants of Menorca have been making wine for centuries, with the earliest evidence suggesting the practise dates to the 13th Century. A few modern-day highlights include Hotel Torralbenc, with a stunning eco bodega project on site. The traditional finca is surrounded by 14 hectares of vineyards which guests can traverse via a curated slow route to enjoy the tranquillity of its vineyard and enjoy the beautiful views. Hotel Torralbenc isn’t the only finca which provides tours on the island, there are plenty of vineyards such as Bodega Binifadet, on Menorca’s southern tip, which offer similar experiences.

IBIZA

Enotourism in Ibiza provides a completely new way of understanding the islands’ culture where visitors can not only learn how wine is produced but understand it’s historical importance. Since the 1990’s the island has produced and exported high-quality liquors across the world. The Monastrell variety is the most widely grown, which gives a matured fruity aroma to red wine. Bodega Can Rich is one of the most famous vineyards on the island, and offers tastings of its ecologic sparkling wines and Ibicencan liquors like the famous “Hierbas Ibicencas in a picturesque setting.

FORMENTERA

The high soil temperatures of Formentera mean the indigenous vines do not need chemical treatment, instead adapting to the high temperature and salty conditions of the island. This makes Formentera wine particularly delicious and often organic. For example, Bodega Terramoll has been producing wines for over 2 decades with a sustainable philosophy. They prioritise conservation of the environment: their Savina, Rosa de Mar and Es Virot wines are 100% organic/ecological. Another highlight is the Cap de Barbaria bodega, founded in 2000 and situated next to the island’s iconic lighthouse. It is beautiful to visit for its green vineyards contrasting with the blue sea.
