As we move from the heat of summer into the changes of autumn, Tokyo plays host to a huge number of festivals all across the city.
These festivals, known in Japanese as ‘matsuri’, are one way for locals to showcase their neighbourhood to the whole city as well as visitors from further afield.
They are also a great opportunity for tourists to experience authentic local culture, take part in the centuries-old traditions and enjoy the good cheer and festive atmosphere.
Matsuri festivals take place all over Tokyo throughout the year but during the autumn season there are some very famous and widely celebrated events that should appeal to many visitors.
The ever-popular hotspot of Kichijoji celebrates the beginning of the new season with its annual Autumn Festival. Join the crowds to see the portable mikoshi shrines paraded through the streets and enjoy the plentiful street food.
Shinagawa’s Shukuba Matsuri celebrates the local traditions and culture of this area which was an important stop on the old Tokaido road in Edo times. Here visitors can see traditional costumes and a wide range of events.
At Asakusa’s Tori-no-ichi festivals people gather to pray for good health and good fortune. These are lively and loud festivals with plenty of food and souvenirs available to the crowds.
Yosakoi dance is one of the most popular team dance events in Japan and Tokyo Yosakoi is a great chance to see and experience it. Watch teams from across the country compete wearing elaborate and colourful costumes.
