Stanley Park is the most popular tourist attraction based on Tripadvisor reviews, with an index score of 92.5

A new study examined 96 of Canada’s well known tourist attractions and created an index based on weighting three different factors to determine which tourist attractions and their provinces are most popular based off Tripadvisor reviews. The rating, the number of reviews and the percentage of five-star reviews for each were used to calculate an overall index score out of 100 and then create a ranking to determine the top ten.

The most popular tourist attraction in Canada is Stanley Park, located in British Columbia, with an index score of 92.5. Stanley Park is one of Vancouver’s most beloved parks which covers 1,000 acres of land. It is home to Canada’s largest aquarium, and you can see beavers swimming in Beaver Lake as well as other wildlife including raccoons, squirrels, and ducks. In 2014, the park was named the “top park in the entire world” on Tripadvisor which increased its popularity massively. The attraction has received 29,250 reviews on Tripadvisor in which 76.74% were five-star reviews.

In second place is CN Tower in Ontario, with an index score of 75.97. Toronto’s CN Tower is the tallest freestanding structure in the western hemisphere and has a glass floor at the top of the tower situated 113 stories above ground. The tower includes a SkyPod level which on a clear day, allows you to see for up to 100 miles. If you are lucky, you can get a view of Niagara Falls and New York State. The attraction has received a total of 25,544 reviews in which 51.24% were five-star.

Old Quebec based in Quebec places third with an index score of 75.54. There are plenty of activities to do whilst in Old Town, including historic excursions and fine dining. There is plenty of architecture to view including the world’s most photographed hotel, the Château Frontenac which has been a precious asset to the city. Other notable key sites to see include: the Petit-Champlain, Place Royale, and the Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral amongst many others. The city has received 13,671 reviews, 81.95% of which are five stars.

In fourth place is The Butchart Gardens, located in British Columbia, with an index score of 70.09. There are so many beautiful natural wonders to absorb when visiting this attraction and it is split up into different sections with different themes. These include the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, the Italian Garden, and the Japanese Garden. There is the stunning Rose Carousel perfect for children as well as adults, not to mention the live entertainment, night illuminations and in summer, firework displays on Saturdays. The gardens have received 11,613 Tripadvisor reviews in which 80.66% were rated five-star.

Old Montreal in Quebec has been ranked as the fifth most popular tourist attraction, with an index score of 64.64. Old Montreal provides a vibrant and historic atmosphere dating back to the 17th century which offers the perfect insight into its French culture. It is important to note that Old Montreal is prone to lots of snow and a lot of places including restaurants and shops shut down between November and March, so it is recommended to visit in the summer months. Notable places to visit is the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Place Jacques-Cartier, and La Grande Roue de Montreal amongst many others. From its 13,837 reviews, 61.64% gave Old Montreal a five-star rating.

In sixth place is Peyto Lake in Alberta, with an overall index score of 61.26. The lake has received 3,275 in which 81.80% rated it five stars out of five. The Peyto Lake Viewpoint is a must see when visiting the Banff National Park treasure. It sits 6,100 ft above sea level and provides a stunning view of the Canadian Rockies. There are plenty of private tours you can find if you want someone to guide you round the natural wonder.

Placing seventh is the Parliament Hill and Buildings in Ontario, with an index score of 61.06. The Parliament Hill and Buildings are made up of three principal structures: the West block, the East Block, and the Center Block. There are many different sculptures around Parliament Hill including past Prime ministers and women who helped achieve equal rights for females in Canada. There is also a centennial fire that has burned since the country turned 100 but it is put out four times a year for cleaning. The attraction achieved 66.53% five-star reviews out of 9,615 in total.

In eighth place is the Royal Tyrrell Museum, located in Alberta, with an overall index score of 60.55. The Royal Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology is Canada’s only museum that dedicates its study to ancient life. It has a display of the world’s largest dinosaurs and exhibits like the Cenozoic gallery, Palaeozoic era, cretaceous Alberta, and terrestrial Palaeozoic. Out of 3,133 reviews, 80.66% awarded a five-star rating.

The Great White Bear Tours in Manitoba take ninth place with an index score of 60.22. Described as the ‘ultimate polar bear viewing experience’, you can travel with guides in Polar Rovers to absorb some of the best arctic wildlife Canada has to offer. Such wildlife includes polar bears, arctic foxes, caribou, snowy owls and many more. You can also stay in the custom-built Tundra Lodge and see the spectacular northern lights. 88.96% of 163 visitors rated this attraction five stars out of five.

Taking tenth place is the Royal BC Museum in British Columbia, with an overall index of 60.08. The museum is Canada’s most important cultural institution since its establishment in 1886. The centrepiece is a 40,000-year-old newborn woolly mammoth named Lyuba, described as the museums best-preserved example The attraction has received 7,182 reviews in which 71.75% gave five stars.

The least popular tourist attraction to visit in Canada is Terra Nova National Park, with an index score of 31.51. Terra Nova is an excellent way to experience the nature, discovery, and adventure of eastern Newfoundland. Out of 132 reviews, 34.09% of them were five-star.

A spokesperson from Tonybet, who carried out the survey, has commented on the findings: “Canada is the perfect country to visit to take advantage of its spectacular outdoors and nature. Not only does it provide rich culture and stunning architecture, its national parks and beautiful wildlife are a spectacle, especially if you are the outdoorsy type.

“It is full of vibrant cities, natural wonders, fabulous Canadian cuisine and even provides exciting festivals throughout the year such as the Calgary Stampede and Montreal Jazz Festival.

“If you are at one with nature and love to learn about different historical culture, Canada is surely a country for your bucket list.”
