Belfast Named Among Worst UK Cities for a Festive Night Out – Do You Agree?

Belfast is officially in the top ten the worst cities for night out this Christmas and New Year’s Eve, according to new a new study. London, Newry, Carlisle, Armagh and Colchester round out the top five UK cities - do you agree?

New data has revealed the top ten worst cities for a night out in the U.K.

The study, conducted by online casino Casibella.com analysed data on the number of bars and clubs, the number of pubs, the average cost of a pint, the average cost of a takeaway and safety scores for walking alone at night to determine the worst, most unsafe and least affordable cities for partygoers in the U.K.

London takes the crown as the worst city for a festive night out in the U.K. England’s capital may be bursting with life and culture, but the study has found that there are only 13 bars and clubs per 100,000 people to choose from and a pint is £6.35 on average. Unsurprisingly, London also has a low safety score at 39/100, according to people who have visited. These factors count towards a final score of 26.39/100.

Newry is the second-worst city for nightlife at Christmas and New Year’s Eve with a final score of 37.82/100. Located in Northern Ireland, the cathedral city’s nature parks and museums warrant a visit. However, while a pint costs only £3.75 on average, there is only 1 bar and club per 100,000 people ready to entertain partygoers, the lowest number in the study.

Carlisle takes the bronze medal. Nestled in the North West of England, Carlisle is close to both the Scottish boarder and the stunning Lake District. The cathedral city’s nightlife, however, is one of the worst in the nation. With only 18 pubs per 100,000 people and the average price of a McDonald’s meal costing £8.50, the city comes in third place with a final score of 38.36/100.

In fourth place is Armagh. Home to the seat of the Archbishops of Armagh, the cathedral city is filled with religious and cultural history in Northern Ireland. However, with only 2 bars and clubs to visit per 100,000 people and a low safety score of 38/100, Armagh is in the top ten worst cities for nightlife with a final score of 41.11/100.

Colchester, a newly appointed city located in the South East of England, is the fifth worst city for nightlife. The study has found that the average price of a McDonald’s meal is £8, the city has a safety score of 37/100 and a final score of 41.53/100.

Dundee ranks in sixth place with a final score of 41.92/100. Scotland’s fourth-largest city has 20 bars and clubs per 100,000 people to visit, the average cost of a McDonald’s meal is £8 and the average cost of a pint is £4.

Southend-on-Sea, with a final score of 42.35/100, is the seventh worst city for nightlife in the U.K. This is followed by Coventry in eighth place with a final score of 43.41/100 and Belfast in ninth with a final score of 43.44/100. Exeter, with a final score of 44.27/100, is the tenth worst city for nightlife in the U.K.

A spokesperson from Casibella.com has commented on the study: “London is officially the worst city for a night out in the nation when considering several factors; including the number of bars, pubs and clubs to visit with friends because there is not enough nightlife to accommodate its huge population of 9.6 million. It is interesting that other cities in the study, from Armagh to Carlisle, are notably smaller and scattered across the nation; this suggests that the quality of nightlife does not depend on the size of a city and can fluctuate around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
