An Oasis of Peace and Pampering

Robin Nowacki checks out an exclusive adults-only resort just 30 minutes from Malaga airport

On a dramatically beautiful stretch of coast on the outskirts of Marbella with views across the deep blue Mediterranean Sea to the distant mountains of North Africa lies a new luxury resort.

Perfect for people seeking a peaceful and relaxing break in the sunshine of southern Spain, the Oasis by Don Carlos Resort offers a delightful mix of spa treatments, activities such as tennis and yoga, and superb gastronomy. All this is within a beautifully designed setting surrounded by exotic sub-tropical gardens leading to Marbella’s wide and sandy Nikki Beach.

Oasis, which is for adults only, opened in late 2013, and sits in a separate exclusive building with its own reception alongside the main Don Carlos Resort – which is family friendly.

Upon entering the Oasis one leaves behind our much troubled world of today into another – muted shades of beige and white abound on walls and tiled floors, timber lined walls, sandstone balconies, supersized super comfortable beds, glass walled designer bathrooms with walk-in showers and baths designed for sharing.

There are suites with private rooftop swimming pools and large open spaces at Oasis, however the more standard rooms are very spacious with generous balconies – fully partitioned for privacy – allowing for a variety of spa treatments with full-sized massage tables to be administered in your own room while enjoying your personal view of the Mediterranean.

In fact with the wonderful cuisine of Oasis master chef, Miguel Angel Chaves, also available delivered by excellent room service – one might never have to venture far from that balcony!

However it is recommended that you do – so as to walk through the beautiful gardens rich in palm trees and other sub-tropical plants with running streams and ponds down to Marbella’s famous Nikki Beach.

Here and in the gardens – when shade from the sun under the palm trees is required – organised lessons from top tutors in Yoga and Tai Chi take place.

This was where I took my first ever tuition in both these classic Far Eastern disciplines – proving more strenuous than I could have imagined.

This left me needing a massage on my balcony administered by the excellent Eva, in order to soothe the parts of the body not pulled in that way in many years – if ever!
To the right of the gardens lies the Tennis & Sports Club, where as well as a state of the art gym there is a room dedicated only to Spin classes.

Outside are nine all-weather clay tennis courts where coaching for all levels of tennis player is available under the supervision of the Director, Argentinian professional Rodrigo Longo.

At the Club there is also a pleasant bar and restaurant with balcony offering views of both the tennis courts and the Mediterranean beyond.

CUISINE

In Chef Miguel Angel Chaves, the Oasis by Don Carlos Resort has a real star, and I so enjoyed partaking of his gastronomic delights.

For lovers of fish or meat or for vegetarians there was so much to enjoy on Miguel’s menus during my stay whilst dining at Bahia Restaurant.

In Chef Miguel Angel Chaves, the Oasis by Don Carlos Resort has a real star, and I so enjoyed partaking of his gastronomic delights.

Homemade Terrine with Hare and Foie Gras; Grilled Scallop wrapped in Iberian Ham; Fresh Squid with Fennel Flavoured Potatoes and Spanish Ratatouille and Ink; Crusted Baby Lamb Loin in Tapenade and Rosemary in Honey Sauce are just some of Miguel’s creations which stand out in my memory.

Local wines such as the white, Botami Jorge Muscatel Seco, and the red Los Aguilas Pago El Espino Sierras De Malaga, also proved excellent.

Combined with good attentive service, quality live music provided by local artists such as guitarist Nicolas Leguizamon, the dining experience I enjoyed during my stay at the Oasis was first rate.
