Weakened North Edged Out of Golf's United Cup

The Northern Ireland Travel Trade team just failed to hold on to the United Cup, competed for annually by Travel golf teams from North and South, at Carton House.

The local team had held the trophy for the past two years.

This Year Las Vegas CVB represented by Tryphavana Cross joined United Airlines' Martina Coogan in hosting the event, when the Northern Ireland team found themselves a man short at late notice.

"If we'd managed to halve the match we would have been able to retain the cup," said a disappointed local captain, Aaron Fletcher of Travel Solutions, "but we had to send one player, Cliff Garland, out on his own. In the end we lost by three and a half to two and a half."

Damien Murphy, Terra Travel was the North's vice captain and lined up alongside his father Terry senior and brother Terry junior. Other members of the Northern Ireland team were Peter McMinn, Travel Solutions, Cliff Garland, Beyond Business, Kieran O'Doherty, Premier Travel, Patrick McGuigan, Classic Sports and Travel, Aaron Caddell and Catherine Fetherston of Travel Counsellors, and guest player for the day, Thorsten Lettnin, the Managing Director of United Airlines in Europe.

"Ironically the captain of the winning team, Stephen McKenna, of comes from Coleraine, so I'm not sure if he should actually have been playing for the South," joked Aaron Fletcher.
