Tributes Paid to Kathleen Davidson

Tributes have been paid to one of Northern Ireland's most respected and longest serving travel agents who died last Thursday.

Kathleen Davidson of Greer's Travel had worked in the Ballymena travel agency for six decades, becoming a Director of Greers when the owner Jack Greer who founded the business, died.



Twenty Per Cent Increase in New January Passenger Figures

A surge of almost 20 per cent in passenger numbers in January at Belfast International Airport has today been described as 'the ideal start to a most promising year' by the airport's Managing Director, Graham Keddie.

The impressive growth rate will be exceeded from the end of March with the arrival of Ryanair which will operate a four-times daily service to Gatwick. The airline expects to carry one million passengers on a total of six routes in its first full year of operation at its new Northern Ireland base.



More Than 2,000 People Apply for 300 Airport Jobs

More than 2,000 applications have been received for the 300 vacancies in companies operating at Belfast International Airport.

The figure emerged during the successful Airport Jobs Fair in Templepatrick yesterday afternoon which featured 14 stands and attracted more than 1,000 people within the first hour.



More Than 100 Travel Companies Signed Up for Big Event

Planning is well underway for this year’s Big Travel Trade Event. More than 100 Travel companies are taking part both in the two-day exhibition on June 14 and 15 at the Hilton Templepatrick and the Northern Ireland Travel News Golf Classic.

New for 2016 is Speed Networking on Day 1 with 20 Travel suppliers participating. There will be a Motivational speaker/Lifestyle coach, Social Media Workshop and lots of brand new Travel companies taking part from Jamaica Tourist Board to Cruise and Maritime Voyages. Putting on Their Dancing Shoes for Charity

A well-known husband and wife Travel team are swapping their computers for dancing shoes and taking part in a Strictly Come Dancing event to raise money for the charity 'Children in Crossfire' - The event is in La Mon hotel on Wednesday, March 23. Tickets are priced £10pp.

Said Aaron Fletcher: "My wife Jenny and I are taking four hours of lessons per week over a 10-week period and will be dancing the Waltz, the Cha Cha and the Jive on the night. Both of us are picking it up ok, but occasionally our two left feet get in the way.

Electronic Permit Needed for Canada from mid-March

Passengers flying to Canada are reminded they will need an electronic permit from March 15 this year.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised the industry that the entry requirements are changing and air travellers will need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA). Passengers who are a dual British-Canadian national won't be able to apply for an eTA, however.



SAS Launches Fare for 'Only Carry-On' Customers

Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, is launching a new fare for passengers travelling with only carry-on bags.

The Star Alliance member has created SAS Go Light, which will apply from April 27, 2016 on all routes around Europe including the airline's UK services.



New Model in Hotel Distribution Sector

Fastpayhotels has launched a new hotel distribution platform and an alternative B2B operator that pays all reservations at time of booking, up to 390 days in advance. The business focuses exclusively on the sale of non-refundable rates.

The company, backed by Spanish investors, launches with more than 2000 hotels and is on track to offer over 6000 hotels to the Trade at the start of the summer season.



Need for Early Booking as Spain, Portugal Demand Soars

Substantial increases in summer holiday bookings for Spain and Portugal have resulted in ABTA - The Travel Association issuing a warning to would-be travellers to these two destinations - book as soon as possible!

As well as a six per cent year on year increase in bookings for overseas summer holidays, UK bookings to Spain have shown a massive 27 per cent increase while Portugal, albeit with a much smaller market share, has increased its bookings by 32 per cent. Bookings to Cyprus are up 14 per cent and Malta by 15 per cent 'also selling well'.



Gatwick Opens New Pier at North Terminal

Gatwick, served by easyJet and Aer Lingus from Belfast and soon to be linked by Ryanair as well, has opened its new £80 million Pier 5 in its North Terminal.

Gatwick Chief Executive Stewart Wingate said a new second level allows the airport to offer two separate arrival and departure routes for passengers on top of one another. This not only makes passengers' journeys easier, but allows the facility and airlines to operate more efficiently.
