ABTA Cautions Government on Credit Card Move

ABTA has commented on the Government announcement that "rip-off charges have no place in a modern Britain and that’s why card charging in Britain is about to come to an end".

ABTA says it agrees that people should not be charged excessive fees when paying by card.

Multi-Million Pound Investment in Irish Sea Ferries

Stena Line's parent company has confirmed a multi-million pound investment package to acquire the Superfast VII and Superfast VIII ferries which operate on its Belfast-Cairnryan route.

The ships currently operate under a charter contract agreement with AS Tallink Grupp and have done since they were deployed on the Belfast-Cairnryan route when it opened in November 2011.

NYC Restaurant Week Gets Underway - for a Month!

NYC & Company, the New York City's official destination marketing organisation, has announced the launch of the 25th anniversary of NYC Restaurant Week, running from yesterday right through to August 18.

New Yorkers and visitors are encouraged to enjoy three-course prix-fixe lunches for $29 and dinners for $42 (excluding beverages, gratuities and taxes) at 391 participating restaurants, featuring 34 diverse cuisines in 42 neighbourhoods across all five boroughs.

First Norwegian Passengers Arrive in Belfast

The first incoming flights of Norwegian's two new services to the US arrived this morning at Belfast International Airport.

The first aircraft was from Providence, Rhode Island/Boston followed an hour later by the service from Stewart International, New York.

Doreen Leaves ABTA's Board of Directors

Northern Ireland has lost its influential voice on ABTA, The Travel Organisation's Board of Directors after 17 years.

Belfast's Doreen McKenzie, former owner of Knock Travel, has stepped down from the Board of Directors following ABTA's Annual General Meeting at the end of June.

'Absolutely Fabulous' - that was the verdict of a representative group from the Northern Ireland Travel Trade who returned yesterday from a four-day trip to Philadelphia.

Value of Sterling at Near Five-Week High

Sterling hit a new five-week high against the US dollar on Friday and was almost holding its value today at the rate of $1.2921 as markets remained upbeat about the potential for a near-term rate hike by the Bank of England.

Comments by Bank of England Governor Mark Carney last week boosted markets with investors' frenzied speculation of an imminent rate hike from the bank helping to strengthen the pound.

Second Reading for New Bill on Consumer Protection

A Bill to give holidaymakers more protection if a travel company goes out of business was debated in the House of Commons yesterday when it got its second reading.

The Government is promising that from next year, holidaymakers who book trips online will get new protection so they are not left stranded abroad or lose money.
