Game of Thrones Boost for Northern Ireland Tourism

After seeing a surge in the number of holiday searches online linked to TV shows, series and movies, a poll has revealed that Game of Thrones, Love Island and Take Me Out inspire the majority of Britons when it comes to choosing a holiday destination.

And Northern Ireland, Croatia and Spain and Northern Ireland have been unveiled as the most sought-after holiday locations.

Three different locations from Game of Thrones feature in the top 10 destinations that Britons consider going on holiday to after seeing the destination on their TV or at the cinema; according to a new poll.

The research was carried out by an offer and discount website following analysis of on-site data which revealed that as many as 16 per cent of all holiday searches on the site included one or more references to holidays linked to TV programmes or movies. 2,411 Britons aged 18 and over, all of whom had booked their next holiday abroad but not yet been on it, were quizzed about their holiday choices.

To kick things off, all respondents were asked ‘Have you ever wanted to visit a destination after seeing it on the TV or big screen?’ to which two fifths of respondents, 41 per cent, said ‘yes’. When asked what piqued their interest the most, respondents stated they ‘considered the destination to be beautiful' (32 per cent), they ‘hoped to run into reality stars/actors’ from the show/film they’d watched (24 per cent) and ‘would love to be able to say I've been to where it was filmed’ (16 per cent).

All respondents were then asked which destinations appealed to them the most. When provided with a list of TV shows, series and movies and told to select all those that applied, the top 10 most desirable holiday destinations were revealed as follows:

  • Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik (Croatia) - 41 per cent
  • Love Island, Majorca (Spain) - 37
  • Game of Thrones, Belfast - 35
  • Take Me Out, Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) - 30
  • Lord of the Rings, Canterbury (New Zealand) - 28
  • 13 Reasons Why, Northern California (USA) - 26
  • I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, New South Wales (Australia) - 19
  • Daredevil, New York City (USA) - 18
  • Game of Thrones, Akureyri (Iceland) - 14
  • Bachelor, Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) - 12
  • According to the poll, 46 per cent of those polled admitted to having been addicted to the recent series of Love Island, ensuring they watched it every night when it was on at 9pm. A further 43 per cent of those polled are currently watching the new series of Game of Thrones, with 66 per cent of these ensuring they keep their Monday nights free for each new episode.

George Charles, spokesperson for VoucherCodesPro commented on the findings: “We find inspiration in a variety of places; recommendations from friends & family, celebrity Instagram posts, and even TV and film. It’s worth noting that not all areas within TV programmes and films are real; some of them are made using a green screen and CGI, even though they look so realistic, so it can be a little easy to get your hopes up only to be disappointed to find out that somewhere doesn't exist. But it’s definitely interesting that this has led to an increase in tourism for some destinations.”
